Hammeries Castle near Losenstein

The Hamme Ries Castle is located in the municipality Losenstein in Steyr-Land District of Upper Austria (Laussa Str. 25).

history

Hammeries is first mentioned in the 13th century. The real name of the Herr Hammerrieser von Weimar was Spitzer; some of the family are buried in the Losenstein cemetery. The Hammerieser belonged to the peasant nobility and had the right to carry weapons. Ries is the name of the pig iron which was brought from Styria through the Ennstal on rafts to Steyr for processing ( hammer mill ).

After the end of iron processing, the Silesian weaving mill was built here in 1801. The following names are to be mentioned as other owners: Berger, Ritter von Bans, Jeckel, Winkelhofer, Dalberg, Pittinghofer and Rudolf Sturm († 1968), successor was Johann Maresch.

architecture

The castle was originally in three parts, with the buildings being united by a central tower in 1527. In the tower there is a marble entrance gate, which is designed with an arch. The letters I. P. and A. P. can be found above the entrance gate, probably a reference to previous owners. The first part of the building was the utility wing, the second contained the common rooms for the staff and the master and the third was intended for the master alone. To the right of the entrance gate there is an attached half-tower. The Hammeries coat of arms can be found in the courtyard. Much of the furnishings were stolen during the plague of 1661. In 1742 the kitchen fireplace was built. The Hammeries complex includes other buildings that are designed in the same color as the castle.
