Herzogswalde castle ruins

The ruins of the Herzogswalde Castle are located in Żubrów , 5 km north of Sulęcin , Lubusz Voivodeship . The place is in the Landsberger Heide ( Puszcza Gorzowska ) on the edge of the Zielenziger lake landscape.

The first written mention of the place comes from 1461, when the von Waldow owned Gut Herzogswalde and Königswalde, among other things. From 1685 the manor was pledged to the widow of the Lagow bailiff Lukanus for 30 years, but was returned to von Waldow in 1698. The mansion was probably built after 1698. In 1731 the estate came into the possession of von Schöning, at the beginning of the 19th century it came into possession of the Countess von Schmettau, then Wilhelm von Rosenstiels. At that time, the estate included the Marienwalde works, a brick factory and a water mill. In 1945 the castle was leased to Adolf von Bülow.

In the second half of the 18th century, probably after the end of the Seven Years' War, a minor renovation took place, in which the representative main staircase was redesigned and a breakthrough to the vestibule to the northern side staircase was created.

After 1945 the castle first became the seat of the local military. The estate was connected to a PGR . Today the ruin is privately owned.

Building

The exterior, a completely plastered brick building , measures 27 mx 15.5 m and has a mansard roof , a roof shape that came into fashion in Brandenburg around 1700. What is remarkable is the great strength of the brick-built outer walls reinforced with field stone, which indicate the use of wall sections from a previous building. The main portal has a conical flight of steps with an openwork sandstone parapet. While the entrance side is designed with 9 axes, the garden side, on which there are larger rooms inside, has 7 axes. The entrance facade has a uniaxial pseudorisalite in the central part and 2-axis lateral pseudorisalite. The farm buildings are grouped around a rectangular courtyard between the village street and the castle.

park

The park is a freely designed landscape park on a pentagonal ground plan with a winding system of paths. In the line of sight of the castle there is a meadow and a small pond, but today it is very swampy. To the east there is a garden area separated from the village by a hornbeam spailer.
