The von Zedtwitz family , who had extensive wealth in the Ascher Ländchen , are considered to be the builders of the castle ; the first building was first mentioned in 1537. The original building is depicted in the church of Podhradí u Aše . In 1678 the castle was expanded further. A stone with a family coat of arms was installed in Doubrava Castle .

The last owners of the family were Franz Josef Zedtwitz (1873–1954), commander of the Dragoon Regiment Prince Windischgrätz in World War I, and his son Franz Xaver Zedtwitz (1906–1942), who also wrote zoological treatises as a writer. In 1945 the expropriated property passed into the administration of the state property and has since been left to decay.

Restoration work on the ruins began in 2013.
