Nääs Castle

Nääs Castle is located in the municipality of Lerum about 25 km northeast of Gothenburg , Sweden . The castle, which lies high above the Sävelången lake, dates from the 16th century, but was rebuilt in the classicist style at the beginning of the 19th century .

In 1868 August Abrahamsson bought the castle and began to refurbish it. Together with his nephew Otto Abrahamsson, he founded a craft school in 1872, which specialized in the training of craft teachers (craft lessons ) and enjoyed an international reputation for its new pedagogy at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

When August Abrahamsson died childless in 1898, he bequeathed the castle and the estate belonging to it to a foundation that was to continue the craft school. While the utility rooms were used for school purposes, the other rooms of the castle were preserved as they looked at the end of the 19th century. The castle is one of the best examples of the stately furnishing style of this time in Sweden and was declared Byggnadsminne in 1991 .

Selma Lagerlöf dedicated the 52nd chapter in her novel The wonderful journey of little Nils Holgersson with the wild geese to the craft school in Nääs Castle .
