Poppendorf Castle is located in Poppendorf , Gnas municipality , Southeast Styria district in southeast Styria in Austria .

location

The castle is located on a small hill at 320 m above sea level above the (formerly swampy) Poppendorfer valley.

history

The beginnings of the castle, which has been modified several times, go back to a castle in the 13th century. It was named after a certain Leutold von Poppendorf, a feudal man of the Lords of Wildon . Ulrich von Poppendorf, the last of his family, who were related to the Fürstenfeldern and Pressnitzers, died in 1386. Afterwards Poppendorf received the status of the sovereign. The rulership often changed hands in the following period.

In 1420 Ulrich Pesnitzer bought the castle, which in 1468 still belonged to his grandson of the same name.

Gradually, its owners expanded the "Haus zu Poppendorf" into a castle. In 1605 it was badly damaged during the Hungarian invasions.

In 1667, Ferdinand von Offenheim began building the palace from scratch, which was completed by Georg Mersperg in 1676 and a free-standing chapel was added in 1720. After several changes of ownership, Poppendorf Castle fell into disrepair in the 19th and early 20th centuries, until it was renovated and restored in 1926, before it completely fell into disrepair. From 1950 the property was parceled out and the land was sold. Today Schloss Poppendorf houses a restaurant and is a place for exhibitions and events. The painter's exams took place here several times, organized by Josef Fink with the cultural center at the Minorites in Graz. It is privately owned.

In 1971 the important Popendorf 71 music festival took place on the grounds of the castle .
