The Sallgast Castle is located in Sallgast , 13 kilometers southeast of Finsterwalde in Brandenburg .

It was built as a moated castle in the 12th century . During the Thirty Years War , the castle was besieged by Swedish troops but not taken. It was converted into a four-wing castle . The extensive castle park was laid out by Robert von Loebenstein around 1880 and expanded in 1911. The castle was restored from 1911 to 1912 according to plans by Bodo Ebhardt . Sallgast Castle and Palace have changed owners frequently in its history.

In 1989 the village and Sallgast Castle were threatened with demolition, as a neighboring open-cast lignite mine was to be expanded towards the village. After German reunification in 1990, these plans were not pursued any further.

Today, Sallgast Castle is used by the municipal administration, and no new tenant has been found for the attached restaurant for a long time. The castle park is generally accessible.

On September 11, 2008, a fire broke out in the roof of the castle, but it was extinguished in good time.
