Schmiedeberg Castle

Schmiedeberg Castle ( Polish Pałac w Kowarach ) is a castle in Kowary (Schmiedeberg), Lower Silesian Voivodeship .

history

Schmiedeberg Castle was probably built in 1720 by bourgeois merchants. It is possible that the castle was temporarily owned by the Hirschberg veil maker Christian Mentzel, as indicated by the keystone above the portal, which bears the Mentzels house brand and the initials "CM". A drawing from the mid-18th century shows the rear of the castle, which has a high mansard roof , and a factory building to the right of it. A plush factory was built on the site behind the castle in 1804 and produced Smyrna carpets from 1856 onwards .

After the Polish takeover of the region, the building fell into disrepair until a German-Polish couple bought the property and had it restored. Today there is a miniature park on the site of the former carpet factory, which shows models of numerous Silesian castles.
