The ruins of Ujest Castle are located on a hill on the northern edge of the old town of Ujest . Adjacent is the Andreaskirche , the parish church of the city. The castle was owned by the Counts of Hohenlohe-Öhringen , who bore the title of Dukes of Ujest and who also owned the nearby Slawentzitz Castle .

History and description

The castle was originally a bishopric of the diocese of Wroclaw and was probably built in the 13th century. In 1443 the "Ujester Halt" was sold from the bishop's possession and has since been owned by various noble houses. In 1580, today's castle was built in the Renaissance style on the foundations of the old castle . Renovations followed in 1660, and more in the 18th and late 19th centuries. In 1837 the castle came into the possession of the princes of Hohenlohe-Öhringen. In 1861, Prince Hugo zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen was awarded the title Duke of Ujest .

In January 1945 the Red Army occupied the city. Not only was the old town destroyed, but the castle was also set on fire. The property of the Hohenlohe-Öhringen family was confiscated by the Polish state. The castle then remained in a ruinous state.

In 2015 and 2016 the facades of the castle ruins were secured, parts of the interior were reconstructed and a viewing platform for visitors was built above the ruins.
