The Castle Wagrain is about one kilometer east of the heart in the borough of Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria . The castle is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

The castle is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1135. From 1447, Wagrain Castle is owned by the Engl family . In 1499 the property was raised to a Hofmark (noble seat ) by Maximilian I and the existing building was replaced by a new building. Except for a religious interruption in 1620, the castle remained in the possession of the Engl family until the 20th century. In 1717 the Engl family was elevated to the status of count. In 1910, Count Siegmund Engl, the last member of the male line of the Engl family, died out. His daughter Berta married Count von Spiegelfeld. In 1950 the Spiegelfeld family sold Wagrain Castle to the city of Vöcklabruck. Since then, the castle has been used for educational and cultural purposes.

The following schools have been using the building since 1950

architecture

Today's castle consists of two of the original four round towers, the main part and the two side wings. Two of the round towers were demolished at the beginning of the 18th century as part of an extension. The gate tower has completely disappeared. In 1980 the former farm buildings east of the castle were demolished to make room for the HTL workshop. The "U" of the original castle was closed by an extension in 2000, creating an inner courtyard. The extension is a modern reinforced concrete structure with a flat roof . The side facing the inner courtyard was completely glazed.

The two-story old building has a hipped roof and an attic gable . On the south side of the gable, the family coat of arms of the Engl family (former rulers) is carved with the wording: "1448 Fear God, Do Right, Shy Nobody 1848". The arcades of the outbuildings have meanwhile been glazed. Visiting the school is only possible from outside.
