Wiltz Castle 2012

Wiltz Castle is located in the Luxembourg town of Wiltz in the north of the country, in the Ösling . The castle is located in the upper part of the city, in Oberwiltz (lux. Uewerwolz). The castle was built in the 12th century and is one of the main attractions of the city.

history

The outside staircase of the castle

The first castle in Niederwiltz, where the deanery church is today, was supposed to protect the city from its enemies, but the location was so badly chosen that it was taken over and over again. In the 12th century, the Lords of Wiltz finally looked for a better location for their new residence and built a second castle on a rocky promontory, the construction of which then established the district of Oberwiltz. In 1388, the castle and town were set on fire by the French besiegers and were rebuilt shortly afterwards. Around the middle of the 15th century, when the Öslinger nobility defended themselves against the troops of Philip of Burgundy , the castle was destroyed again.

The oldest part of today's castle is the Hexenturm on the northwest side. It was built in 1573 and has been restored twice in the following years. Since the 19th century, the roof of this multi-storey tower has been adorned with the figure of the legendary Count Jan, whom the Wiltzers appointed as an armored knight as their eternal guardian. The square tower dates from 1626, but its substructure goes back even further. This tower used to be the main entrance, which was reached via a drawbridge. To the right of the bridge was the judicial linden tree , which is why the square in front of the castle is still called Lannepesch today . In 1631, under the rule of Count Jan, the construction of the Renaissance castle, which is still preserved today, began. The Thirty Years' War , sieges, famines and epidemics delayed the work by almost a century, so that the new building could not be completed until around 1720 under Count Charles-Eugène de Custine de Wiltz.

The new palace chapel was built in 1722 , and the monumental external staircase leading into the palace garden was completed in 1727 , which has served as the backdrop for the Wiltz Festival since the 1950s, together with the palace facade .
