Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum
The narrow-gauge railway museum Irchester ( English : Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum) is a small railway museum with a meter gauge -Eisenbahnlinie in Irchester at Wellingborough in Northamptonshire , England.
history
The Wellingborough area was rich in iron ore. Around 1872, a quarry was opened in Irchester to mine iron ore, which was mainly smelted in local ironworks. A steam-powered narrow-gauge railway was used to cope with the ever-increasing transport volume. The quarries were closed in 1969.
In 1971, Northamptonshire County Council opened Irchester Country Park on the site of the former open pit quarries . The park has a network of walking paths, a visitor center and a children's playground in a grassy and wooded landscape. Within this park, the museum was established in 1987 in the depot of the former railway. There are more than 40 exhibits of narrow gauge vehicles there, including seven steam locomotives and two diesel locomotives. A 250 meter long track with a gauge of 1000 mm was laid in the park. The original water tank of the railway depot has been renovated, complete with lettering.
