Butterfly (heraldry)

Butterfly in the coat of arms of Saint-Médard-sur-Ille , France

The butterfly is a common figure in heraldry and thus a heraldic animal .

The representation follows the natural shape of a butterfly and the wings are often heraldically tinged . The wing drawing rarely corresponds to reality and then it is greatly simplified. This only applies to a few species and must then be mentioned in the description of the coat of arms by naming the species. Few species are suitable as heraldic animals and are even included in the coat of arms . The heraldic animal can also be in a field with other heraldic figures . Often there are several butterflies in the coat of arms. The top view with the feelers to the head of the shield is the rule. The side view or the butterfly with folded wings is not used because it does not give a clear coat of arms.
