The "Schnur" alarm system , also known as the P 161 device system, was a complex, self-contained device system for transmitting signal states to subordinate troops. In the National People's Army it was used for the central transfer to higher levels of combat readiness .

The cord equipment set (P161) was only introduced into the NVA from the USSR in the mid-1980s and, after a test and trial phase, was used in the second half of the 1980s. At the same time, the staff of the United Armed Forces of the Warsaw Pact introduced the Monument alarm system into the coalition forces. With the cord equipment set, the NVA's alarm and notification system was modernized and the central transmission of signals from the MfNV's operational command center to subordinate commands, units and units was ensured. The operator station was designed in a desk design and was operated by the operational duty officer of the Ministry of National Defense . The system ensured the automated alerting of the connected participants across several management levels using existing direct wire, radio link or radio links. Primarily wire connections were used that were connected as two-wire or four-wire telegraphic channels. These connections for the operational exchange of information were blocked while commands were being transmitted.

main clause

Local notification desk

The main clause was intended for:

  • the formation of the warning / alarm commands and their transmission to subordinate management levels,
  • the control of the additional record, if this has also been set up,
  • the branching of transmission channels for the time of the transmission of the commands,
  • the receipt and fixing of commands from the higher management level,
  • the generation and transmission of the confirmation signals (automatic, manual confirmation) on a received command,
  • the transmission of the signals "Trewoga" (German: alarm) and "Prowerka" (German: control) in the sentence of the local notification.

The adjacent pictures of the device system from the former operational command center of the Ministry of National Defense show the command and address desk with the possible levels of combat readiness in the NVA and the military facilities connected to the system. It means:

  • - "EG" - increased combat readiness,
  • - "KG" - combat readiness in case of danger of war and
  • - "VG" - full combat readiness.

The address desk is labeled:

  • - "LaSK" - for command land forces,
  • - "ZGS" - for the central command post of the air force / air defense,
  • - "TGS VM" - for the territorial command post of the People's Navy of the GDR,
  • - "MA" - for the military academy "Friedrich Engels" ,
  • - "2.NBr." - for the 2nd intelligence brigade ,
  • _ "RfuR-2" - for the radio relay regiment 2 and
  • - "WE" for the maintenance units of the auxiliary communication centers that are directly subordinate to the Ministry, such as HNZ-2, HNZ-4 and HNZ-8.

Branch of transmission channels? Wired transmission channels were used to transmit warning / alarm commands. Under normal conditions, these were connected to a telex exchange of the type RLD 80 in the message center of the MfNV and were used for telex traffic. The transmission channels were automatically activated for the use of the "Cord" system.

Additional sentence

The additional sentence was used to transmit the commands in up to ten directions, in connection with the main sentence, and to receive the corresponding confirmation signals.

Local notification set

Circuit P 161 local notification at the Strausberg site

The rate of local notification was intended for the transfer of the NVA troops, facilities and services deployed to the location of the system to higher levels of combat readiness. For this purpose, these were connected to the system via direct current paths (lines). The inscription in the adjacent picture from the sentence of the local notification for the Strausberg site indicates a. to the following affiliated agencies and duty officers:
