Scholia Sinaitica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called Scholia Sinaitica (derived from Scholion , Greek  σχόλιον " Schulstückchen ", Latinized in the plural: scholia ; short: SS ) are papyrus fragments of a Greek commentary on Ulpians libri ad Sabinum , which is believed to be dated between 438 and 529 AD, after different authors had worked on it one after the other. The scroll was found in a monastery on the eponymous Mount Sinai in the 19th century.

The manuscript contains adaptations of books 35 to 38 of the Ulpian work originally comprising 51 libri . Ulpian had addressed this to the famous law teacher of the 1st century, Masurius Sabinus . Since the authors of the post-processing apparently had in-depth knowledge of late classical literature and the imperial constitutions , research suggests that the work came from the Beirut law school . Legal text passages are cited which found their way into the codices Gregorianus , Hermogenianus and Theodosianus .
