The club school Schomre Thora Basel ( Hebrew שומרי תורה) was founded in 1895 by the community rabbi Arthur Cohn . The central concern of this traditional institution is to impart Jewish knowledge. Children, young people and adults are taught in Tenach , Talmusic subjects , Ivrith and Jewish philosophy .

The Israelitisches Lehrhaus Foundation is usually referred to synonymously with the Shomre Torah, although they are two independent bodies.

history

In 1895 Arthur Cohn, rabbi of the Basel Israelite Community, founded the “Schomre-Thora youth club Chewrat Schomre Thora in Basel”. Every “innocent religious Israelite who has reached the age of 16” could become a member. In fact, older, married men will soon have joined the association.

According to the statutes, the goals of the association were:

  1. the study of the Torah and the observance of religious regulations made possible by it,
  2. the opportunity for social gatherings,
  3. the friendship service in the event of illness and death and the promotion of general charity.

The Israelitisches Lehrhaus Foundation was able to meet the legitimate need for their own premises.

Although the purpose of the foundation is closely linked to the Shomre Torah, there are two separate bodies.

The club went through a few changes in the course of its long history. For example, the youth club became a men's club.

Schomre Thora largely managed to stay out of the tensions between the Israelite Community of Basel and the Israelite Religious Society of Basel (IRG) founded in 1927.

Today the spectrum ranges from liberal to orthodox to ultra-orthodox. In doing so, it was possible not to lose sight of the goal of conveying Jewish knowledge and culture.
