Scotland Office

The Scotland Office (English: Scotland Office , Gaelic: An Oifis Albannach ) is a department of the enlarged British government responsible for Scotland with offices in Dover House, Whitehall , London and Melville Crescent, Edinburgh . Chief officer is the Scotland minister ( Secretary of State for Scotland ).

The Scotland Office was established in 1885 by the British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury . The first Secretary for Scotland of the Scottish Office was Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond . Since 1892 the Chief Executive of the Scottish Office was a member of the British Cabinet . Over the decades, the office was able to expand its importance and also developed competencies in the economic sector. In 1997, the Scottish population voted overwhelmingly for its own Scottish Parliament , with limited powers within the UK. In 1999, therefore, many of the duties of the Scotland Minister were transferred to the then newly introduced office of First Minister of Scotland and the Scotland Office was officially renamed the Scotland Office . The Scotland Minister remains a member of the British Cabinet . The Scotland Office now serves as the link between Her Majesty's Government in London and the Scottish Regional Government.
