Protective equipment (martial arts)
The protective equipment in martial arts is different depending on the sport and is used both for self-protection and to avoid injuries to the opponent. If effective results are desired in a competition , the protective equipment worn there often differs from that worn in training.
The standard equipment of most martial arts can be broken down as follows:
- head protection
- Mouthguard
- Groin guard
- Fist protection
- Instep protection
- Shin guard
- Elbow protection
- Forearm protection
- Knee protection
- Combat vest
- Chest protector
The individual parts can be combined or left out as required.
In addition, there are a number of martial arts that require special protective equipment. They include, among others, fencing (fencing masts and suits) and kendo the bogu .
In Budo sports , a special combat suit, the Keiko-Gi or "Gi" for short , is usually worn. It serves to protect the skin from abrasions and is helpful when performing throwing, grasping and choking techniques.
