Black bread stands for:

  • Rye bread , dark (in Northern Germany, Groffbrot)
  • Rhenish black bread , made from rye meal, rye sourdough, rye flakes and wheat flour (in the Rhineland)
  • Mixed bread made from rye and wheat flour (in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland)
  • Pumpernickel , Westphalian wholemeal bread made from rye meal
  • Bošnjak , in Austrian usage a small black bread
