The Black Bastion is a preserved part of the listed Domburg in the city of Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in downtown Merseburg on the east side of Brauhausstrasse .

Architecture and history

It belonged to the outermost of three wall rings of the fortifications of the Merseburg Cathedral Castle and formed its northwest corner. At this point there was the Black Gate , which formed the transition between the Merseburg old town and the suburb of Altenburg. However, the gate was walled up in 1668, according to other information in 1688, and later removed in parts, only the eastern part, now known as the Black Bastion, remained. In 1913 it was uncovered during work on a breakthrough between Unteraltenburg and Domstrasse . The plant was repaired in the 1980s. The work was done on a voluntary basis by members of a working group of mushroom friends who set up their headquarters here and lasted from autumn 1985 to autumn 1988. 5300 hours of voluntary work were performed.
