Black barracks

The Black Barracks was a military barracks in the Upper Swabian town of Memmingen in Bavaria . It burned down in 1898.

The Black Barracks was between the Lindauer Tor and the Westertor .

Appearance

The building was a two-story half - timbered building . The second floor was reached via a wooden external staircase in the form of an arcade. The back was the city wall.

history

The Black and Red Barracks were commissioned by the Bavarian Elector Maximilian II in 1702 after he had captured the city after a siege. He had the two identical barracks built on the western city wall to accommodate the soldiers stationed in Memmingen. Shortly after the capture, Memmingen became a Free Imperial City again , so the barracks were no longer needed. The Black Barracks was then used as a residential building and burned down in 1898.
