history

The trunk of the Swedish linden tree

The Swedish lime tree is a 400 to 500 year old summer linden tree ( Tilia platyphyllos ). According to a local legend, this is called the Swedish linden tree, as a Swedish officer who died during the Thirty Years' War is said to have been buried by his lover under the tree, which was already striking at that time . It stands in the churchyard of the village church of Brielow, which was built later .

Due to its size and the associated load and the risk of branches and trunk breaking, the tree has been secured several times over the years with chains and steel ropes. For the first time in 1880, a blacksmith from Brielow prevented the tree from splitting. Further security measures followed. The penultimate securing took place in 1996. This was the first time that belts were used. In 2007, the crown protection installed in the 1990s and partially torn during Hurricane Kyrill was replaced. The Swedish linden is considered to be the thickest tree in Brandenburg.
