History of origin

Silverudds Blue - usually wrongly called "Swedish Isbar" in Germany - were raised in the 1980s by a Swedish pastor named Martin Silverudd for the Swedish egg production. The aim of his breeding was to be able to further optimize the laying performance without using the drop nest control. Therefore he bred a breed in which each hen should lay an individual green / blue egg color. For this he used productive New Hampshire and Rode Island Red. The cream legbar added the gene for the green / blue eggshell color . Australorp was probably responsible for the blue plumage that gives it its name . Unfortunately, Silverudd did not consider that the egg color of a hen can vary over the year. The trap nest control was therefore superfluous. Silverudd died unexpectedly in 1986 without being able to complete his race. Nevertheless, he created a chicken with an excellent laying capacity of 250 eggs per year, which is becoming increasingly popular, especially with hobbyists and self-sufficient people, not only because of the colorful eggs.

features

Due to their original use, Silverudds blue have a laying capacity of approx. 250 eggs per year which weigh 50–60 g and can vary in many green and blue tones. Their unique color spectrum ranges from light, pastel green and blue tones to strong, dark olive and moss green. They were bred with 2 alleles for green / blue eggshell color and are therefore often used to describe the so-called "colored layers" e.g. B. to create olive layers. Silverudds Blue are robust, insensitive to cold and not very eager to breed. They are also considered to be lazy to fly and good forage seekers, are calm and friendly and easily become tame. Swedish breeders are known to have good resistance to Marek's palsy.

Appearance

Martin Silverudd was unable to finish his work on the breed due to his sudden death, so the appearance of the Silverudds Blue is not well defined. There are different lines that z. B. can vary significantly in size. It is no longer comprehensible whether the "easy" or the "heavy" variant is the more original. Silverudds Blue have the blue plumage color (Andalusian blue). This splits into blue, black and splash (dirty white). The roosters in particular can have some gold or silver in their plumage. Silverudds Blue have green colored barrels . The weight of the hens is given as 1.0–2.0 kg, that of the cocks as 2.0–3 kg.

Others

In Sweden, Silverudds Blå are looked after by “Svenska Kulturhönsföreningen” , the Swedish cultural association for chickens.
