initial situation
The 2016 Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium entered the competition as the favorite . The reigning world champion Jessica Ennis-Hill from Great Britain - including Olympic champion from 2012 and Olympic runner-up in 2016 as well as Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton - two-time runner-up world champion in 2013 and 2015 and Olympic runner-up in 2016 - were no longer there in London . The strongest competitor for Thiam was the German Carolin Schäfer, who had improved a lot in the current season and started with hopes for medals. Other athletes with good prospects for top places were the Latvian World Cup third in 2015 and Olympic gold medalist in 2016 Laura Ikauniece-Admidiņa, the French European champion in 2014 and vice European champion in 2016 Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida and the Dutch European champion in 2016 Anouk Vetter.
Course of competition
Over 100 meter hurdles , the first discipline, the Dutch Nadine Visser was clearly the fastest female heptathlete with 12.85 s. Except for her, no other athlete undercut the 13-second mark. The American Kendell Williams - 13.02 s - and Schäfer - 13.09 s - came closest to the Dutch woman. Of the other favorites, Vetter was the best with 13.36 seconds. Nana Djimou Ida ran for 13.46 s, Thiam 13.54 s and Ikauniece-Admidiņa had 13.71 s. The Latvian gave up the competition due to an injury.
In the high jump Thiams strengths first came to fruition. With 1.95 m she jumped as high as never before in a heptathlon during a world championship. The Cuban Yorgelis Rodríguez also reached this height. Schäfer was the third best high jumper together with the Czech Eliška Klučinová. These two heptathletes jumped 1.86 m. Vetter reached 1.77 m and was still well in the race, while Nana Djimou Ida already fell significantly behind with 1.71 m. In the overall standings, Thiam took the lead with 2215 points from Rodríguez, who was only eight points behind. Third was Schäfer - fifty points behind the leader - ahead of Visser - 127 P behind. British Katarina Johnson-Thompson followed in fifth place - 162 P. Vetter's gap on Thiam was 196 points.
The shot put , the third discipline, was one of Thiam's strengths. The Belgian achieved the largest distance of all heptathletes in this competition with 15.17 m. Apart from her, only the American Sharon Day-Monroe with 15.14 m and Vetter with 15.09 m exceeded the value of fifteen meters. But Schäfer also convinced here with 14.84 m - a personal best for her. Klučinová also pushed wide with 14.80 m. Rodríguez reached 13.45 m, while Visser could not quite keep up with 12.96 m. Thiam had expanded her lead, she now had 3087 points in her account. Schäfer was second, 77 points behind. Rodríguez stayed in third place at 123 points behind Thiam. It was followed by Vetter, who already had 201 points to catch up. Klučinová was only ten points behind Vetter in fifth.
In the 200 meter run , the last discipline of the first day, Brit Katarina Johnson-Thompson ran the fastest time with 22.86 seconds. Schäfer was seven tenths of a second slower, but achieved the second fastest time. It was followed by the American Erica Bougard - 23.66 s - and Visser - 23.73 s. Certainly behind were Vetter with 24.36 s, Rodríguez - 24.42 s, Thiam - 24.64 s and Klučinová - 24.72 s. Schäfer even took the lead after day one with 4036 points. Thiam was only 22 points behind. Rodríguez followed in third place - 131 P behind - ahead of Johnson-Thompson, who was 198 P behind Schäfer. Vetter, Visser and Klučinová followed closely behind.
In the first exercise of the second day, the long jump , Thiam adjusted the situation in her favor. At 6.57 m she jumped the farthest, an inch further than Johnson-Thompson. At 6.55 m, the German Claudia Salman-Rath was only another centimeter behind. Vetter jumped 6.32 m, Visser jumped 6.30 m, Rodríguez 6.23 m. At 6.20 m, Schäfer remained a little below her potential. Thiam was again at the top of the overall ranking with 5044 points. Schäfer followed 96 points behind. Johnson-Thompson had taken third place, 179 points behind the leaders. Rodríguez was fourth, more than two hundred points behind Thiam. Then followed, as before, Vetter, Visser and Klučinová.
In Javelin cousin played their strength fully and had with her 58.41 meters, almost four and a half meters ahead Thiam, the second-best pitcher. Cousin's performance was the best javelin throw ever achieved in a World Championship all-around event. With the Ukrainian Alina Schuch, the Austrian Ivona Dadic, the Swiss Géraldine Ruckstuhl and the Hungarian Xénia Krizsán four other athletes had to show distances beyond the 50-meter mark. Schäfer then followed with 49.99 m. Rodríguez threw 47.41 m, Klučinová came to 41.91 m, Johnson-Thompson to 41.72 m. In the ranking, nothing changed in the first two places, but Thiam had increased her lead to an unassailable 172 points over Schäfer with 5980 points. Vetter had improved to bronze with her good javelin throw and was only a tiny three points behind Schäfer, who was, however, the better 800-meter runner. Rodríguez was already 199 points behind Vetter in fourth, so just like the other athletes who followed, he had little chance of winning a medal. Johnson-Thompson was now fifth, ahead of Dadic, Visser and Klučinová.
As expected, the final 800-meter run didn't bring any major changes. The Hungarian Xénia Krizsán ran the fastest time with 2: 07.17 min, ahead of Salman-Rath - 2: 07.37 min. Katarina Johnson-Thompson remained fifth overall despite a strong 2: 08.10 minutes, because Yorgelis Rodríguez was not far behind with 2: 10.48 minutes and thus secured fourth place. Nafissatou Thiam 2: 21.42 minutes were enough to become world champion with 6784 points. Carolin Schäfer scored 2: 15.34 minutes and was 88 points behind. Second ahead of Anouk Vetter, who scored 2: 19.43 minutes and took the bronze medal sixty points behind Schäfer. Ivona Dadic was sixth ahead of Nadine Visser and Claudia Salman-Rath.
