The opening moves are played
- 1. f2-f4 f7-f5
- 2. e2 – e4
The goal of this turn is to play Froms Gambit in a suit. After 2.… f5xe4 3. d2 – d3 e4xd3 4. Bf1xd3 White follows and receives an attack on the kingside for the pawn. He has the move f2 – f4 for free compared to Froms Gambit, which is an advantage in some variants.
This gambit got its name after the chess player Alexander Wagner (1868–1942), who was born in Lemberg and who lives in Stanislau (today Ivano-Frankiwsk ) in Galicia , successfully used it at the Swiss long-distance tournament in November 1911. In 1912 he published a theoretical article on this gambit. However, Wagner specifically advocated the move sequence 2.… f5xe4 3. Nb1 – c3 Ng8 – f6 4. g2 – g4.
