The positions arising in Froms Gambit are characterized by the following features:
- White has an extra pawn and a good chance of occupying the center . In addition, the black queenside is often underdeveloped.
- White's weakness is the diagonal e1 – h4, which forms the leitmotif for black mate attacks. In addition, Black has a small development advantage because by 3.… Bf8xd6 he was able to bring his first piece into play in front of White and thus reversed White's draw advantage .
The following main variants illustrate the possibilities for Black to receive compensation for the pawn sacrifice:
- Black tries to exploit the weakness of the diagonals e1 – h4: 4.… g7 – g5 (a move by Emanuel Lasker )
- 5. g2 – g3 g5 – g4 6. Nf3 – h4 Ng8 – e7 7. d2 – d4 Ne7 – g6 8. Nh4xg6 h7xg6 9. Qd1 – d3 Nb8 – c6 10. c2 – c3, White wants to castle long, Black tries, to take advantage of the open h-line.
- 5. d2 – d4 g5 – g4 6. Nf3 – e5 Bd6xe5 7. d4xe5 Qd8xd1 + 8. Ke1xd1 Nb8 – c6 9. Lc1 – f4 Bc8 – e6 10. e2 – e3 0–0–0 + 11. Nb1 – d2 Ng8– e7 12. Bf4 – g5 Rh8 – e8 13. Bg5 – f6 with chances on both sides.
- Black wants to compensate the minus pawn with a development lead: 4.… Ng8 – f6
On the initiative of Georg Deppe , the German Correspondence Chess Federation organized three themed tournaments in 1961/62, 1966/68 and 1969/71 to explore this opening .
