The Swiss Computer Science Olympiad or SOI is a Switzerland-wide programming competition for young people under the age of 20. It is also the association that is responsible for organizing these Olympics. The competition has existed since 1992 and allows young people to participate in the international computer science Olympiad ( International Olympiad in Informatics ). The organization association is a member of the umbrella organization of the Science Olympiad .

Every year there is a practical part and a theoretical part. In the practical part, the participant has to solve a list of problems by programming. Every possible high-level programming language is allowed in the first round: C ++ , C , Java and PHP . From the second round only C ++, C and Pascal are allowed. Possible tasks were, for example, finding the exits in a maze.

SOI days

The SOI-Tag 2007 took place at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ( ETH ) in Zurich . Various speeches were given, for example about Google , computer science in biology or information about algorithms. For this purpose, the winners of the programming task 5-in-a-row were announced, in which the participants had to write a program that plays against the programs of the other players. The winners of the first round in the practical and theoretical part were also announced.

The SOI Day 2011 took place on January 15th at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . Speeches were given about the application of computer science in biology, the sequence alignment process, and quantum computer science . Also, IBM was represented there and presented the participants of the first round of SOI. For this purpose, the two most demanding programming tasks of the theoretical and the practical round were presented and solved. Later a ( multi snake ) tournament took place in which the submissions for the Creativity Task were presented, in which the submitted algorithms , which were supposed to control a snake in an adaptation of the game Snake, were programmed into different maps. The 13 best in the first round qualified for the Davos-Camp, a winter sports camp in which the participants are intensively coached for the next round.
