The Swiss Society for General Internal Medicine (SGAIM) is a specialist medical society in Switzerland. It is an association according to Art. 60 ff. ZGB and has around 7000 members.

aims

The SGAIM wants to work for a comprehensive, efficient and patient-oriented general internal medicine (AIM) and ensure the promotion of the next generation of specialists in this area. She sees herself as a representative towards politics and health care authorities. The guiding principle of the SGAIM is: «Medicine for the whole person». The company's goals include:

  • Establishment of a network for general internal medicine in Switzerland
  • Promotion of young talent
  • Organization of your own congresses
  • Administration of the specialist title AIM and the accreditation of the core training courses AIM
  • Promotion of science and research through collaboration with the institutes for family medicine and the medical departments of Swiss universities.
  • Financial contributions from the SGAIM foundations to specific scientific projects
  • Ensuring quality and representation in tariff structuring within the framework of SwissDRG
  • Raising the awareness of the medical profession and the general public about the topics of AIM

To this end, the SGAIM works with other organizations such as the Young Family Doctors Switzerland (JHaS), the Swiss Young Internists (SYI) or the Professional Association of Family and Paediatricians Switzerland (mfe).

history

The SGAIM emerged from the merger of the Swiss Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM; until 2008 Swiss Society for Internal Medicine) and the Swiss Society for General Medicine (SGAM). With the merger of the two specialist societies on December 17, 2015, Switzerland's largest medical specialist society was created. The merger took place on the occasion of the founding meeting on December 17, 2015 in Bern in the Yehudi Menuhin Forum. The merger should give AIM a stronger position vis-à-vis the various actors and authorities involved in health care.

Campaigns

smarter medicine

In 2014, the predecessor organization of SGAIM, SGIM, was the first specialist medical society in Switzerland to compile and publish a top 5 list of medical measures in the outpatient sector that currently have over- or incorrect care. In doing so, she started the smarter medicine campaign, which was based on the example of the Choosing Wisely initiative in the USA .

In 2016, the SGAIM presented another list with five recommendations in the inpatient area to the public. In the same year SGAIM decided together with the SAMS a sponsoring organization to set up, should be involved in the both patient and consumer organizations and trade associations of non-medical health professionals. At the same time, the association should also unite all previous Choosing Wisely initiatives in Switzerland. On June 12, 2017 the association smarter medicine - Choosing Wisely Switzerland was founded.

On April 17, 2018, the Swiss Academy for Quality in Medicine (SAQM) awarded the SGAIM the “Innovation Qualité” prize in the category of medical organizations for its efforts with the “smarter medicine” campaign.
