The Swiss Cheese Union was a Swiss marketing and trading organization for cheese. It existed from 1914 to 1999. Its task was to promote sales of the three Swiss hard cheeses Gruyere , Emmentaler and Sbrinz . For this purpose, the cheese union bought the entire production and sold it at prices set by the Swiss Federal Council . She also coordinated national and international marketing for these three varieties. The price fixing also applied to milk and cheese domestically and was conditional on the cheese union supplying the population with sufficient cheese. The cheese union was thus effectively an economic cartel . Between the two world wars, price fixing and export monopoly were replaced by agreements between farmers, cheesemakers and exporters.

In 1992 the Swiss Cheese Union launched a campaign under the motto “Where is Sbrinz?”. It was a competition to search for the «hometown of Sbrinz». The prize should have been "a year of vacation". However, there is no such place in the region of origin of the cheese, so there could be no winner.

From 1992 to 1999 the company was the main sponsor of the Swiss national ski team.

At the general assembly on January 15, 1999, the dissolution of the company was resolved on the basis of the new agricultural law. The cheese union ceased operations at the end of April 1999 .
