The Schwelmer Tunnel is a 742 meter long former rail tunnel in the northeast of Schwelm . The tunnel, built in 1879 and shut down since 1967, runs parallel to the 945 meter long, still used Linderhauser tunnel on its western side through the Linderhauser ridge between Schwelm and Gevelsberg .

In the last months of the Second World War , both tunnels were converted into a bomb-proof production facility under the code name “Meise” (also “Meise 1” ) as part of the U relocation . In October 1944, the Gottlob Espenlaub company from Wuppertal- Langerfeld moved into the Linderhauser Tunnel for actual production and the Schwelmer Tunnel for loading and unloading material, workers and aircraft for the repair and repair of combat aircraft, mainly Focke-Wulf Fw 190 . Production was continued until the arrival of American troops on April 14, 1945. Despite the subsequent reprocessing for rail traffic, there are still traces of its former use on and in the tunnel, for example a few slewing crane bases.

Speleologists from the Kluterthöhle working group have been investigating the Schwelm Tunnel, where numerous caves were already being cut, since the 1980s. They bought the tunnel 2017. So far, eight caves were detected, including in the northern portal area the "Schwelmer Schächtchen" , in the tunnel "Schwelmer tunnel cave" and "Schwelmer Mud" and the southern portal area the "foxhole" , the "Nicholas Cave" , the "Röhrenhöhle" and the "Osterbachhöhle" .

A connection between Schwelm and the Nordbahntrasse , including the Schwelm tunnel to promote cycling, is currently being discussed.
