Tilt rotor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With tilt rotor are propeller actuators referred to in which the axis of the propeller can be pivoted longitudinally or transversely, in order to change the direction of the applied tensile or compressive force. Tilt rotors or propellers are mainly used in aircraft and watercraft.

In the case of aircraft, they allow a take-off in a vertical position like a helicopter . However, in this case one usually speaks of a tilt rotor , since the pivoting movement takes place around the transverse axis of the aircraft.

Also airships often use to increase the maneuverability swiveling propellers: USS Akron , Zeppelin NT , Skyship .

In watercraft, tilting propellers are primarily used to increase maneuverability in confined spaces, especially in harbor tugs with Schottel propulsion .
