The severity Pikenierrüstung ( English pikemen's armor ) is an English Armor type of pikemen from the first half of the 17th century.

description

A severity Pikenierrüstung consists of steel . It was mainly used during the English Civil War (1642 to 1651), but the troops of Queen Elizabeth I consisted mainly of pikemen and arquebuses . At this time the traditional longbow of the English was replaced by the pike , as the longbow could no longer prevail against the increasing quality of armor. The armor of the pikemen was made particularly sturdy and in its time offered excellent protection against the early arquebus projectiles. The breastplate is made from one piece and reinforced in the vertical middle of the chest. Leg guards ( tassets ) are movably attached to the breastplate to protect the thighs. The helmet (English pot helmet ), which belongs to this armor, is very heavy-duty and equipped with a foldable visor , which consists of strong metal rods. The neck of the wearer is protected by movably connected, stacked (pushed) plates. Mounts are attached to the lower edge of the helmet and the visor, which rest on the shoulders of the breastplate and serve to reduce the weight of the helmet. A metal ruff ( gorget ) is often worn with this armor . The back protection consists of two plates that are attached to the leg guards and the back armor with leather straps. This heavy armor is due to the pikemen's fighting style. The pikemen, together with arquebusiers, formed battle lines ( shot and pike ) like the phalanx and the hedgehog . This way of fighting made the troops relatively immobile and therefore had to be protected against fire and sword blows.

Most of the armor of this type is simple, as the majority of the pikemen came from the peasant and working class. The pikemen's armor used under Elizabeth I was designed differently and was not as stable as yet. This heavy pikeman armor is the last type of armor used in English history. Due to the rapidly increasing quality and penetration of firearms, armaments became less important.
