ScienceStage is a global, science-oriented multimedia portal with a focus on online video streaming . It is intended to support communication between scientists and professional practitioners. In addition, university lecturers, practitioners, students and people interested in science can use the website as a virtual research, teaching and training tool. The video content mainly includes conference recordings, interviews, documentaries, webinars and tutorials.

ScienceStage sees itself as a “hub” (interface) for science, teaching and the research industry. In this sense, it creates a meta-level that links users and user groups as well as multimedia content (videos, audios, documents and document links). The aim is to provide academics from science and practice with an effectively integrated multimedia and socially networked working level. In 2010 ScienceStage is the official media partner of the World Health Summit for the first time.

Website

Registered users can create stages and groups, upload content and take part in discussions, making their ideas available to the specialist network and a global audience. In this way, ScienceStage aims to act as a catalyst for science and practice.

The content is posted by the individual channel operators (people, institutions, companies) themselves or by ScienceStage on their behalf. ScienceStage bundles video, audio and text content to which the Open Access model or certain Creative Commons licenses apply (e.g. OpenCourseWare from MIT and TED Talks ).

The user also has access to external online document databases such as PubMed , IEEE and CiteSeer . The user can use links to access the original content on the relevant output pages and servers. The content of internal databases and such external databases are linked to one another via the multimedia search and recommendation systems. ScienceStage can thus also be characterized as a science-oriented multimedia search engine.

The content is generally monitored by the ScienceStage community. The website allows comments, ratings and the reporting of legally problematic content. Apart from that, you can bookmark your own favorites and create your own title lists for videos and audios.

Networking

Stages (profile pages)

Individuals and organizations can set up public profiles called stages . By means of uploaded content, users can publicly present their research projects, universities or companies. Uploaded content is linked with related content of all multimedia file types (videos, audios, documents) as well as with relevant stages and groups.

groups

When users have common interests or expertise, they can create groups or join a group. Groups are regularly set up to discuss a specific topic or to work on a joint project. In contrast to stages, groups can be set to either public or private.

The group size is not limited. Videos or other content can be assigned to a group by first uploading or embedding a corresponding content on your own stage and then adding it to the content of a group. In this way, videos, audio clips and documents can be put together in a group by several users from the university and / or practice and linked to one another.
