Scotia Conservation Area

The Scotia-reserve (Engl. Scotia Sanctuary ) is a nature reserve in the Murray Basin in New South Wales in Australia . The reserve is 150 km south of Broken Hill on the border with South Australia . It is 65,000 hectares and is home to numerous rare animal species.

The vegetation consists mainly of dry bushland. Endangered species, some of which were locally extinct and have been reintroduced, are protected in the reserve. To ensure their survival, invasive species that do not belong to the Australian fauna are being fought. An area of ​​12,000 ha is kept free of cats, foxes, goats and rabbits. The reserve is now home to self-sustaining populations of at least seven species that were previously extinct in the area. These include ants Beutler , bridled nail-tail wallaby , Greater bilby , Lesueur brush kangaroo , woylie and greater stick-nest rat . Furthermore, a population of the rare shaggy rabbit kangaroo is bred. In addition come Western Gray Kangaroo , Eastern Gray Kangaroo , Red Kangaroo , mountain Kangaroo , Southern Ningaui , Slender-Tailed Dunnart and various bat species. Among the birds, emus , wedge-tailed eagles and thermometer chicken can be named as conspicuous species. In total, the reserve is home to 20 species of mammals, 145 species of birds, 47 species of reptiles and two species of amphibians.
