The small narrow-foot pouch mouse ( Sminthopsis murina ) is a species of marsupial mammal from the genus of narrow-foot pouch mice , which is widespread in eastern Australia .

description

The head body length of the males is 76 mm to 104 mm, the tail is 79 mm to 99 mm long and the weight is 16 to 28 g. Females are slightly smaller with a head body length of 64 mm to 92 mm, a tail length of 68 mm to 92 mm and a weight of 10 to 22 g. The fur is mouse gray on the back and whitish on the belly. The muzzle is pointed, ears and eyes are relatively large.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of S. murina stretches from the eastern and southeastern coasts and central Australia from the Cape York Peninsula in the Northern Territory to Victoria and South Australia east of the Flinders Range .

There were two subspecies:

  • S. murina murina lives in the entire range mentioned above,
  • S. murina tadei only between Townsville and Cairns in northeast Queensland .

The small pouch mouse is found at heights between 60 and 360 m and prefers areas with annual rainfall between 30 and 85 cm. The habitats inhabited are eucalyptus bushes, dry forest areas and dry heathland.

Reproduction

The breeding season in New South Wales begins in September and lasts through March. The females can mate in the next mating season, the males usually die after mating. The gestation period is 12.5 days, after which 8 to 10 young are born, who are weaned at 60 to 65 days. This species is nocturnal .
