Scroogle was an online service that acted as a proxy for the Google search engine . Scroogle protected the privacy of searchers by preventing the recording of user activities. In particular, Google logging and long-term storage of user activities using cookies or IP addresses were avoided. Otherwise, this data gave the group the opportunity to draw conclusions about the personality of the user based on the search terms entered and the links on the results pages.

The Scroogle proxy was SSL- enabled and hid advertisements on the results pages. 28 languages were supported for search; a Scroogle plugin was available for Mozilla Firefox . According to the company, the server logs were deleted every 48 hours and the search queries were not saved on a user-specific basis.

The site was created in April 2003 by Google critic Daniel Brandt, who disagreed with the collection and analysis of information about user behavior by Google. The rights belong to the non-profit company Public Information Research Inc. , which also operates Google Watch .

On July 1, 2010, Scroogle switched off its search service for a few days; This was justified with a change in the Google interface.

The site has not been available since mid-February 2012 after Google started blocking the service shortly before. Scroogle founder Daniel Brandt confirmed to BetaBeat.com that Scroogle will no longer go online.
