The Seán O'Casey Bridge ( Irish : Droichead Sheáin Uí Chathasaigh ) is a pedestrian bridge over the River Liffey in the Irish capital, Dublin . The bridge connects the northern and southern port districts ( Docklands ) and is named after Seán O'Casey .
The bridge is around 100 meters long. The two halves of the bridge rest, rotatably mounted, on a pillar each, which means that both halves can be swiveled by 90 degrees to allow ships and boats to pass through. The bridge piers are each to four, 12-meter-long bored piles founded .
The design of the bridge was sought in 2002 by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority as part of a competition. The winner was the architect Cyril O'Neill, who prevailed against 79 competitors.
In 2006 the design received the “Best Pedestrian Bridge” award at the International IStructE Awards .
