Seann Triubhas

The Seann Triubhas , ( Scottish Gaelic “old or unwanted pants”, cf. English “trews” for “pants”), pronounced [ ʃɑːn truːz ], is a Scottish highland dance that is danced in competitions and as a show dance . Some of the steps included are attributed to their origins in the tradition of hard shoe dances.

Emergence

The name is commonly traced back to the Scots rebellion under Bonnie Prince Charlie of 1745, which was put down at the Battle of Culloden . As a result, the Scottish "Highlanders" in the Act of Proscription of 1746 were allowed to wear traditional kilt clothing, e.g. Some banned under threat of banishment.

Since the Scots were now forced to wear English costume ("Sassenach garb", "Sachsentracht"), as a striking distinction to the usual Scottish clothing, especially (English) trousers such as B. to wear breeches , the dance should symbolize the shaking off of the unloved trousers, in the figurative sense of the English rule, which in the first part of the dance ("Slow Step Part") u. a. is represented by shaking or wiping movements of the legs.

The dance is performed in one of the two step variants:

- 4 steps (3 slow steps and 1 quick step)

- 6 steps (4 slow steps and 2 quick steps)

The opening step is mandatory, the rest is up to the dancer. At higher level competitions such as the annual championships, certain, annually changing step sequences are prescribed by the SOBHD (Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing).
