Sebastian de Ocampo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sebastián de Ocampo (* 15th century; † 16th century) was a Spanish explorer. He was the first explorer to completely circumnavigate the island of Cuba in 1508. Under the orders of the Governor of Hispaniola , Ocampo sailed along the northern coast of Cuba to the western cape of San Antonio. The trip took eight months because of the Gulf Stream . Europeans had visited Cuba many times before Ocampo made his trip. But only his circumnavigation confirmed that this country was actually surrounded by water and thus an island and not a peninsula of the Chinese or Indian mainland, which was then still considered to be. With this news, Ocampo returned to Hispaniola. Thanks to his reports, the maps of Christopher Columbus could be supplemented and improved.
