The Seaman's Mission Brunsbüttel is operated by the German Seaman's Mission West Coast eV and is therefore a member of the German Seaman's Mission . Brunsbüttel is located at the mouth of the Kiel Canal in the Elbe.

The station offers on-board visits, transport trips to and from the airport and the seamen's club for relaxation and contact between seafarers and their families at home. Like all seaman's missions, the Brunsbüttel station is mainly financed by donations, collections from the parishes, voluntary ship taxes from the port companies, contributions from the Evangelical Lutheran Church and proceeds from sales in the club. The seamen's club welcomes around 4,500 seamen and visitors all year round.

Since 2013, the German Seamen's Mission West Coast eV has been operating another station in Glückstadt (Lage) on the Lower Elbe .

history

In 1953 the mission began in a disused military barracks. It served as a waiting room for seaman's wives for 13 years, until a seaman's women's home with a few rooms and a lounge was built in its place in 1966. In 1965 a seaman's home was built in an old warehouse on the south quay. Due to austerity measures by the church, the poor condition of the seaman's home and the low occupancy rate of the seaman's women's home, the facilities were closed in the mid-1970s. Finally, an empty single-family house was converted and refurbished. With the inauguration in July 1978, the first real seaman's home was built in Brunsbüttel. The foundation stone for today's seafaring center with club rooms, prayer room and five rooms for overnight stays was made possible by donations.

Club work

The work in the club is performed by full-time and voluntary employees. A bus shuttle is offered to transfer seafarers to and from the airport and the surrounding area. As in every seaman's mission, due to the ever shorter lay times, on-board visits are very important, during which the employees have many things that are important for the seafarers in their luggage, especially SIM cards . Furthermore, the employees of the seaman's mission take on sick visits and pastoral support. FSJ or BufDi positions are also filled.

Furnishing

The club building has seating areas, billiards and a karaoke system. Seafarers can use free W-LAN in all rooms for contact at home . A small shop offers everyday necessities such as SIM cards , toiletries, drinks and snacks for the stay in the club. An outdoor sports field for basketball and a terrace complete the facilities. In 2010 a multi-religious prayer room was financed with a charity event.
