Blessing covenant of life

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lebensbund is a rubric in the parish registers of the Old Catholic Church in Austria. They attested both the marriage mixed gender and the partnering same-sex couples. This is intended to express the equivalence of the two forms of life.

Same-sex marriage , which has been possible under civil law in Austria since January 1, 2019, is excluded from this.

meaning

The previous rubrics of the church registers "Blessing of marriage" for heterosexual and "Blessing of partnership" for homosexual couples should be combined under the heading "Marriage". A corresponding application to the Ordinary Synod 2019 of the Old Catholic Church in Austria was submitted under the title "Change of entry in the church records". In the course of the debate on this proposal during the Synod, this formulation was criticized by some parishes. Mainly substantive arguments of theological nature were put forward. Finally the synod agreed on the designation "life covenant". The amended proposal was finally accepted by the High Synod with a two-thirds majority.

Although same-sex marriages have also been possible in Austria since the decision of the Austrian Constitutional Court on December 4, 2017 , theological reservations still exist as to whether marriage can also be seen as a sacrament for homosexual couples . Bishop Heinz Lederleitner estimates that the process of the theological formulation for the revision of the marriage sacrament within the Union of Utrecht could take up to ten years.
