Life

Heinz Lederleitner studied Catholic theology at the University of Vienna and in Rome from 1976 to 1983 . The sacrament of ordination was given to him by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI. From 1983 to 2002, Heinz Lederleitner served as a priest in various parishes and institutions of the Roman Catholic Church , mainly in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel .

In 1995 Lederleitner started a doctoral project in which he dealt with the work of Georg Baudler . The doctorate was assessed by Johann Reikerstorfer and Wolfgang Treitler . In 1999 he completed his studies in Vienna with a doctorate in Catholic theology.

On July 13, 2003 Lederleitner converted to the Old Catholic Church , in which he “recognized an authentic Catholic path - Catholic in the sense of all-encompassing and excluding none.” From 2004, he worked as a pastor ( vicar ) in several parishes in Vienna, Carinthia and East Tyrol .

The International Anglican Old Catholic Coordinating Council (AOCICC) is a joint institution of the Old Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht and the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury . Lederleitner has been delegated to the international committee since 2013. In August 2014 he became pastor of the Krems-St. Pölten . The pastoral care room comprised the Bürgerspitalkirche in St. Pölten, the Willibrord Chapel in Krems and the places of worship in Amstetten , Purkersdorf and Waidhofen an der Thaya .

At the same time he headed the department for religious education in the Old Catholic diocese in Austria. Until 2015 he was a member of the Synodal Council and the College of Examiners as well as chairman of the clergymen's conference.

Old Catholic bishop

Heinz Lederleitner was elected bishop at the Synod of the Old Catholic Church in Austria on October 24, 2015. He succeeded John Okoro , who retired at the end of 2015 .

Lederleitner was ordained bishop in Vienna on February 13, 2016. The consecration service was held by the Archbishop of Utrecht Joris Vercammen as main consecrator and former Bishop John Okoro and the Czech Bishop Dušan Hejbal as co- consecrators . The Old Catholic Eucharist took place in the Lutheran City Church in Vienna , with three Roman Catholic auxiliary bishops, the Protestant bishop and representatives of Orthodoxy present as ecumenical guests.

Heinz Lederleitner sees one of the goals of his episcopate as providing increased support for Old Catholics living in the diaspora. As bishop he represents the Austrian Church in the International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference .

Lederleitner is a member of the Evangelical Michael Brotherhood. Lederleitner has been married to Marina Wießpeiner since 2004. In the Old Catholic Churches, celibacy is not compulsory for the clergy , so married theologians are also called to priests and bishops.

Bishop Lederleitner's motto is: Christ - Light of the World .
