The Okaya Silk Museum ( Japanese 市立 岡 谷 蚕 糸 博物館 , Shiritsu Okaya Sanshi Hakubutsukan , "Okaya Municipal Silk Museum") was opened in 1964 on the outskirts of Okaya in Nagano Prefecture , Japan . It is intended to commemorate the time when Okaya and the entire Nagano Prefecture were the center of the Japanese silk and silk manufacturing machine industry.

From the beginning of the Meiji period , Okaya was a center of the Japanese silk industry . The silk industry flourished well into the early Shōwa period when cheap synthetic fabrics became more popular and widespread.

In addition to pictures and old machines from the silk factory, the museum itself houses an ongoing silk production by the Miyasaka Seishisho company ( Miyasaka Silk Reeling Co. ) in the main building of the museum. The museum reopened after moving in August 2014 in the center of the city, not far from Okaya train station.
