The Ashgabat Cable Car (also: Turkmenbashi Cable Car ) connects the Turkmen capital Ashgabat with a mountain in the Kopet Dag Mountains . The cable car was built by the French company Bouygues and opened in October 2006.

planning

In August 2004, then Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov , also known as Turkmenbashi , signed a decree commissioning the construction of the cable car. The construction company Bouygues from Paris was entrusted with the implementation . The cost of the project was covered by Turkmenistan's currency reserves.

investment

The station in the south of Ashgabat is located in a 6500 square meter park. The other station is on a 650 meter high mountain in the Kopet Dag Mountains. The route is 3.5 kilometers long and has 15 cabins, two of which are designed for freight and one is for maintenance purposes. The passenger cabins offer space for eight people. In the event of strong storms, the cable car is blocked immediately and operations come to a standstill. In the event of a power failure, a diesel engine drives the cable car. A culture and entertainment center was built on the mountain, which can be reached by cable car, which includes several telescopes for viewing the surroundings, a restaurant and an 80-meter-high artificial waterfall .

opening

The cable car was opened on October 18, 2006 on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the independence of Turkmenistan. In attendance was President Saparmurat Niyazov, who put the cable car into operation and was the first passenger to take the route.
