Rigiblick cable car
The Rigiblick cable car runs in the Oberstrass district of the city of Zurich ( Switzerland ) and connects the valley station on Universitätsstrasse with the Rigiblick mountain station on the Zürichberg . The narrow-gauge funicular is operated by the Zurich Transport Authority (VBZ) and used by around 600,000 passengers annually.
history
The original plan was to build a tram from the mountain station of the Polybähnli up to the Germania hill. Instead, a small funicular was built from Universitätsstrasse up to Germaniastrasse. With the construction of the viaduct over Hadlaubstrasse, a steel bridge made of reinforced concrete was built for the first time in Switzerland . On April 4, 1901, the Rigiviertel (SR) cable car started operating.
In 1951, the two old wooden wagons were replaced by modern metal wagons. Between 1978 and 1979 the cable car was completely renewed. In 1978 the old mountain station Germaniastrasse was demolished and the line extended 80 meters uphill. She also got two new cars. On May 29, 1979, the renewed cable car was opened under the name “Seilbahn Rigiblick” as the first fully automatic licensed cable car in Switzerland with the intermediate stations Goldauerstrasse, Hadlaubstrasse (crossing station) and Germaniastrasse.
