Cable car technology (formerly: cable car specialist) is an Austrian apprenticeship with an apprenticeship period of 3.5 years.

Cable car technicians are responsible for the maintenance and operation of cable car systems . You work in a team with a vocational college in winter and often outdoors. In addition to operating, checking and maintaining cable car systems, there is also the safety aspect - compliance with the conditions of carriage and operating regulations, taking necessary safety measures in difficult weather conditions such as fog, thunderstorms and wind - as well as the service aspect - advising and looking after guests and transporting children or school groups, the transport of people with disabilities, freight transport or winter sports equipment - an important part of everyday work. Customer-oriented behavior and high communication skills are also expected.

Work and activity areas

In addition to operating, checking and maintaining cable car systems such as funiculars , cabin cable cars , chairlifts and surface lifts , the following activities apply:

  • Technology check: Function, driving and braking tests of the cable car
  • Checking the functionality of lift chairs, bubbles, hangers, cabins, ropes, supports, rollers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the meaning of all operating signals, handling of radio systems
  • Control of the route, supports, ropes, clamps, drives and station equipment
  • Operation and maintenance of drives, braking systems, gears and emergency drives in the station
  • Exchange of wearing parts
