A Selbsthilfebox even Bergungsbox , is a weatherproof, unlocked box, a rescue carrier and other first-aid material as containing bandages, breathing aids and rails, and is installed at remote points in the mountains.

It enables mountaineers and hikers to help and transport each other in the event of an accident before the mountain rescue service can arrive.

The self-help boxes in Saxon Switzerland are particularly well-known ; the first were set up in the 1960s. They are financed and maintained by mountain sports and mountain rescue associations and donations, but recently also through a system of sponsorships by hikers, families, mountaineers or companies.
