The Semaine des barricades à Alger , German "Barricade Putsch in Algiers", was a failed coup by Pierre Lagaillarde against the government of Charles de Gaulle at the end of January 1960 in Algiers . After he had initially opposed the independence of Algeria, which was part of France, and owed his return to power in June 1958 thanks to the support of the European colonialists, he publicly spoke out in favor of ending the Algerian war and independence. Some disappointed colonialists decided to express their opposition to this decision through the occupation.

process

The MP Pierre Lagaillarde occupied the building of the Université d'Alger on January 22, 1960 with the Front National Français founded on November 1, 1958 by the nationalist innkeeper Joseph Ortiz . In the evacuation of the university building fourteen policemen and six squatters were killed and injured about 150 people.

On February 1, 1960, Pierre Lagaillarde was arrested.

On February 4, 1960, most of the ultra-colonialist organizations under French control were banned.
