Sendigbrunnen

The Sendigbrunnen is a fountain in Bad Schandau in the Free State of Saxony . Named after Rudolf Sendig (1848–1928), the sponsor of the spa business and public life in Bad Schandau, it marks the center of the market square, which is surrounded by residential buildings and the Johanniskirche .

architecture

In 1896, Rudolf Sendig made it possible to build a fountain in the form of historicism and Art Nouveau on the marketplace, which had been quite inconspicuous until then . It was inaugurated in the autumn of the same year. The urban development of the city of Bad Schandau thus reached its preliminary climax.

history

With the First World War and the economic crisis, the previously quite fortunate urban development came to an end. Only the fountain survived the 1920s and 30s as a symbol. In the war and post-war chaos around 1942–45, the top of the fountain was destroyed or dismantled. Reasons are suspected to be the meltdown for war purposes or the dismantling by the Red Army . The remaining well basin fell into disrepair over the decades and was eventually filled with earth due to leaks. The fountain now formed a small basin above the water supply.

reconstruction

In 1994 the idea arose to restore the fountain in its old form. The market square was intended to be redesigned as the new communicative center of the health resort and the Sendigbrunnen was to occupy this center as a coronation and as a symbol of the regained citizenship. The specific planning required investigations, which were unsuccessful despite the search in regional and national German archives.

The Dresden sculptor Eberhard Wolf was won over for the reconstruction at the end of 1995 . Thanks to his initiative in acquiring the necessary basics (photos, reports and descriptions), a 1:10 scale fountain model was created in 1998.

In the years that followed, several construction phases were carried out under the leadership of the City of Bad Schandau. In February 2008 the Friends of Sendigbrunnen Bad Schandau e. V. Shortly afterwards, the bronze casting of the fountain bowl was awarded to the Lauchhammer Kunstguss and bell foundry. The upper group of figures was cast in the summer of 2011. On September 4, 2011 the ceremonial unveiling of the rebuilt fountain took place.
