Sergio Vitier

Sergio Vitier García-Marruz (born January 18, 1948 in Havana ; † May 1, 2016 there ) was a Cuban composer and guitarist.

Vitier, son of the poet couple Cintio Vitier and Fina García-Marruz, studied at the Conservatory and the "High School for Music" in Havana. There he joined the “Group for Experimental Music” at the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), which was directed by Leo Brouwer and to which the most prominent representatives of the Nueva Trova belonged. He then worked as a guitarist in the “Cuban Orchestra for Modern Music”, as a concert soloist and teacher at the “School for Modern Music”. From 1968 to 1986 he led the group Oru with Rogelio Furé, which tried to mix classical, jazz and Afro-Cuban music.

In addition to experimental pieces, he composed numerous guitar songs.
