The designation Servizio Informazioni Operative e Situazione (SIOS) ( German  intelligence service for operational intelligence and situation assessment ) was used in the Italian armed forces from 1949 to 1997 for three intelligence organizations (G2 / A2), each of which was subordinate to the general staffs of the army , navy and air force .

The staff of the three SIOS services came among others. a. also by the Carabinieri and mainly had to perform security and counter-espionage tasks as part of the armed forces. Some offices were also responsible for intelligence tasks, mainly in the area of telecommunications intelligence . The SIOS service of the Air Force ( SIOS-Aeronautica ) is said to have also dealt with UFOs . In addition, he also played a role in obstructing the investigation into the Ustica plane crash .

The three SIOS services were coordinated in certain areas by the intelligence service of the Ministry of Defense, the SISMI (or by its predecessors SID and SIFAR). When in 1997, as part of a military reform, the general staff of the armed forces was significantly upgraded compared to the general staffs of the armed forces, the three SIOS services and units for electronic warfare were merged and the new Centro Intelligence Interforze was founded , which is part of the 2nd department (J2 - II RIS) of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. The more generally oriented SISMI continued to have coordination responsibilities until 2007 to determine the division of labor in the military area.
